With fresh competition from DC's Clayface, which topped the domestic box office this past weekend with a $24 million haul, the reigning champion, Street Fighter, plummeted down the leaderboard. Street Fighter topped the weekend box office chart in its first weekend of release, grossing $30 million despite mediocre reviews. The video game adaptation had aimed to overtake this year's Mortal Kombat II, which grossed $38 million in its domestic debut and concluded its box office run with around $80 million in the bank. Mortal Kombat II is viewed as an underperformer, and as things stand, Street Fighter is destined to fall in the same bracket.
The movie stars Noah Centineo and Andrew Koji alongside an eclectic supporting cast that includes Andrew Schulz, Cody Rhodes, Eric André, and Don Lee, among others. Directed by Kitao Sakurai, Street Fighter now holds a 41% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, "The latest iteration of Street Fighter has plenty of affection for its source material and doesn't lack for dizzying style, but its incoherent storytelling and juvenile humor make for a disappointing regression among video game adaptations." The film's 41% score on Rotten Tomatoes is lower than Mortal Kombat II's 63% from earlier this year.
