Which sci-fi film has defined 2026 cinema so far? There is little doubt that the Phil Lord and Christopher Miller-directed film Project Hail Mary holds this title. Ryan Gosling led this heartfelt space exploration, as one man's mission to save the universe unlocks the most unlikely of intergalactic friendships. The film was called "truly out of this world in every possible way" in a 9/10 review from Collider's Ross Bonaime, one of countless glowing appraisals of this film.
But heading into 2026, most eyes had been drawn to the long-awaited return of Steven Spielberg to the sci-fi genre as the potential standout of the year. Starring Emily Blunt, Josh O'Connor, and Colin Firth, hopes were high that the first-contact tale Disclosure Day would be the veteran's latest masterpiece. Alas, the movie was met with mixed reviews and proved underwhelming both critically and commercially.
Making just under $250 million worldwide against a reported budget of $115 million, Disclosure Day was one of the big underperformers at this summer's box office. But since its theatrical run, the film has picked up steam on streaming, becoming a PVOD favorite. On Friday, October 9, Spielberg's latest made its way to a new streamer and is already a big hit. At the time of writing, Disclosure Day is the most-watched movie on Peacock in the U.S., outperforming Coraline, The Grinch, and the 2025 adaptation of War of the Worlds.
The Biggest Sci-Fi Film of the Year Awaits
Disclosure Day might have underwhelmed audiences, but there's little chance that the year's biggest sci-fi film will prove anything less than extraordinary. On December 18, Dune: Part Three will debut in global theaters, capping off one of modern sci-fi's greatest trilogies. Frank Herbert's once-thought "unfilmable" Dune novels have been transformed into the stuff of cinema legend by Denis Villeneuve, with Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides one of this decade's most recognizable big-screen characters. He will return for Part Three alongside a stacked cast that includes Zendaya as Chani, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides, and more.
