Fans of Stephen King's landmark stories had a terrific week with a new adaptation of Carrie taking the Prime Video crown, and another show inspired by his work — Below — cemented itself as the number-one hit on Netflix. Meanwhile, director Stanley Kubrick's horror classic The Shining, which King famously detests, is also making a streaming resurgence. Audiences interested in checking out an eerily similar haunted house movie are in luck because a critically acclaimed hit from only a few months ago is now streaming on Hulu and proving to be a major win for the streamer. The film follows a writer who travels to the remote Irish countryside, where he checks into a creaky old hotel supposedly haunted by supernatural entities.
Severance star Adam Scott plays the lead role. Scott recently experienced tremendous success on streaming thanks to the Netflix psychological thriller film The Whisper Man, which has amassed around 80 million views so far. While The Whisper Man, which also features Robert De Niro and Michelle Monaghan, received poor reviews, Scott's haunted house movie was critically acclaimed. It premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival in March, and was released theatrically by Neon in May. It grossed a solid $25 million worldwide against a reported budget of $5 million.
