‘Severance’ Star’s Netflix Thriller Officially Scores 67 Million Views in Just 3 Weeks

Carefully created to appeal to the broadest possible audience, a new movie is emerging as a sleeper hit on Netflix. The movie, a psychological thriller, features stars who've proven their popularity across generations, and a plot that would appeal to anyone in between. While it revolves around grisly crimes, it is also a father-son story with a heart. We're talking about the old-fashioned Netflix thriller The Whisper Man, in which a grieving novelist and his son move to a town devastated by serial child abductions. The movie stars Adam Scott in the lead role, and is curiously the second time this year that he has played a novelist battling internal demons.

The first was the haunted house movie Hokum, which was a sleeper hit itself. It grossed around $25 million at the box office against a reported budget of $5 million, and is currently sitting at a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The Whisper Man, on the other hand, hasn't been as well-received. It appears to have settled at a 46% score on the aggregator website, with Collider's David Caballero describing it in his review as "a worthwhile exercise in quasi-genre pulp that will rattle you just enough to keep you fixed on the TV, at least until the credits roll." The movie cost a reported $50 million to produce, making it the latest in a streak of mid-budget hits on Netflix, following The Rip, Apex, Swapped, Thrash, The Last House, and War Machine.
