When it comes to genres of movies that hold up better than others, few genres have as many timeless classics as movies set during WWII. When it comes to iconic WWII movies, some of the first that may come to mind are Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List, but there are hundreds more that hold up just as well, and even memorable TV shows like Band of Brothers. Tom Hanks has been a pioneer of the World War II genre, and not just thanks to his Oscar-worthy performance in Saving Private Ryan. A few years ago, Hanks starred in one of the best straight-to-streaming WWII movies, Greyhound, and he can also be seen narrating the new WWII docuseries, WWII With Tom Hanks, which is streaming on the History Channel.
There have already been a few iconic WWII movies introduced to the world this year, including Pressure, the pre-D-Day drama starring Brendan Fraser and Andrew Scott. The film is now streaming on Peacock after grossing over $30 million at the global box office. Not long after the premiere of Pressure came another WWII hit, Lucky Strike, starring Scott Eastwood and Colin Hanks, son of the great Tom Hanks. Lucky Strike had a much more limited run at the box office, which allowed it to only gross $1.6 million during its entire run, but the film has since found a streaming home on Hulu. Lucky Strike has been one of the most-watched movies of the entire year on Hulu, where it still sits comfortably in the top 10, and it doesn't look poised to give up its spot anytime soon.
What Is 'Lucky Strike' About?
In addition to Scott Eastwood and Colin Hanks, Lucky Strike also stars Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor as Mrs. Caldwell, Henry Hughes as Dauntless, Taylor John Smith as Bellingham, Kwame Patterson as Maren, Jonathan Yunger as Cash, and more. Marc Frydman wrote the script for the film with Rod Lurie, who also stepped behind the camera to direct the feature. The official synopsis for Lucky Strike, which earned scores of 65% from critics and 69% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, reads as follows:
“Inspired by true events, Lucky Strike tells the story of one soldier trapped behind enemy lines during the last major German offensive during WWII, what will become known as The Battle of the Bulge. Armed only with his Motorola SCR-300 radio, a new technology only battle-ready near the end of the war, he must use his wits and spy craft to thwart the advancing Nazi Panzer army and find his way back home.”
