Ridley Scott returned to the sci-fi genre earlier this year with The Dog Stars, but despite it being his first sci-fi film in almost 10 years, there wasn't much demand for the movie. Scott enlisted some major stars, including Josh Brolin, Jacob Elordi and even Margaret Qualley to headline The Dog Stars, but the film didn't even scrounge together $30 million at the box office before leaving theaters as one of Scott's lowest-grossing films. Fans of Ridley Scott won't have to wait long to see if he finds box office redemption, though, as he's officially returning to the big screen next year for a remake of Treasure Island starring Hugh Jackman. Hugh Grant and Owen Cooper also star in the film, and Adolescence scribe Jack Thorne penned the script for Scott's new pirate epic.
While it might be next year before Ridley Scott has a new movie in theaters, he does have a new TV show coming out sooner than you may realize. Scott is one of the leading producers on Blade Runner 2099, which is set to begin streaming on Prime Video next month on November 25. The show is a direct sequel to both Scott's original Blade Runner movie from the 1980s and the legacy sequel Blade Runner 2049, but creatives involved with the show have confirmed it's much more in line, at least tonally, with the original Blade Runner movie. Anticipation for Blade Runner 2099 is so high right now that fans are rushing to check out the Blade Runner 2049 sequel on streaming, which has led it back into the top 10 on Paramount Plus and Prime Video in America several times this month.
Is Ridley Scott Directing Any Episodes of 'Blade Runner 2099'?
Ridley Scott is producing all eight episodes of Blade Runner 2099, but he is not directing any episodes of the series. Blade Runner 2099 stars Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and Hunter Schafer (Euphoria) in leading roles, and the series is set in a world where the power dynamic between humans and replicants has shifted. Tom Burke, who recently appeared opposite Anya Taylor-Joy in the 2024 sci-fi film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, has also been tapped for a key role in Blade Runner 2099.
