Prime Video to Remove Matt Damon’s Sci-Fi Masterpiece in 19 Days

Has there been a better film in the first half of 2026 than Project Hail Mary? Ryan Gosling's "amaze-ing" space adventure is expected to even go head-to-head with the awards-friendly titles set to debut in 2026's second half, as many are touting it for success at the Academy Awards, especially in the technical categories. The Phil Lord and Christopher Miller-directed sci-fi masterpiece earned almost $700 million at the box office, becoming one of the year's highest-grossing movies in the process.

Taking the bestseller by Andy Weir and evolving it into must-see cinema, Lord and Miller made "the type of rousing, exciting blockbuster filmmaking that we rarely see these days," according to Collider's review. He added, "With Project Hail Mary, Lord and Miller have crafted a film that’s truly out of this world in every possible way." But this wasn't the first time a big-screen adaptation of the author's work has earned such praise.

Ridley Scott's Next Movie Is Leaving Theaters Soon

In 2015, Weir's 2011 novel The Martian was transformed into a theatrical masterpiece that critics called "impeccable," "palpable," and "a piece of sweeping populist entertainment." Directed by the great Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon, the movie was also a major box office success, scoring a global haul of $653 million, split between $228 million domestically and $425 million from international markets, similar to Project Hail Mary. While the success of Gosling's 2026 hit has renewed interest in the sci-fi favorite, subscribers need to act fast, as the sci-fi masterpiece will be leaving Prime Video in just 19 days.

Alien: Covenant was the only sci-fi movie Scott had made in the years following, with his attention largely taken by the likes of legacy sequel Gladiator II and the controversial Joaquin Phoenix-led historical epic, Napoleon. Scott recently returned to the cosmos with The Dog Stars, an adaptation of Peter Heller's 2012 novel starring Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, and Guy Pearce. However, the post-apocalyptic thriller is already preparing to leave theaters soon following a depressing reception from critics and a disappointing turnout at the box office.
