Warner Bros. has effectively ended the theatrical run of its recent legacy sequel, having debuted the film on the PVOD market a week ago. The studio seemingly overestimated the film's worth, giving it a humongous release in more than 4,000 theaters nationwide. However, the movie ultimately underperformed at the box office, and will most likely find its audience at home. It was released nearly three decades after its predecessor, which had a similarly lukewarm theatrical run but emerged as a cult favorite on DVD and television in the subsequent years. The sequel added Maisie Williams and Joey King to the cast, with the leads from the original reprising their roles.

The new film was released in the wake of other legacy sequels targeted at a similar audience: Hocus Pocus 2, Freakier Friday, The Devil Wears Prada 2, and the Mean Girls reboot. Freakier Friday and the Mean Girls reboot grossed $153 million and $105 million worldwide, respectively. Hocus Pocus 2, on the other hand, was released directly on Disney+. The biggest hit of the bunch is The Devil Wears Prada 2, which generated around $700 million worldwide this summer. The new W.B. movie, on the other hand, is poised to conclude its theatrical run sandwiched between Freakier Friday and Mean Girls.

Here's How Much the Legacy Sequel Has Grossed So Far

We're talking, of course, about Practical Magic 2. Directed by Susanne Bier, the movie brings back Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman from the original Practical Magic, which grossed $95 million worldwide against a reported budget of $75 million. Also produced on a reported budget of $75 million, the sequel has grossed $105 million worldwide. This is about as far as it'll probably go, having lost another 416 theaters this week. The movie will enter its seventh week in just 147 theaters, having lost roughly 3,900 locations during the course of its run so far. Practical Magic 2 has settled at a 36% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, but its 90% audience score on the aggregator website certainly bodes well for its home-video run. It's off to a solid start. According to FlixPatrol, the movie is among the most popular titles on the Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu charts domestically.
