Two weeks into its so-so theatrical run, a new video game adaptation is showing signs of fatigue. Not only did the movie nosedive at the box office in its second weekend of release, but it has now lost a significant chunk of theaters as it enters its third. The film delivered a solid box-office debut, but its appeal seems to have been front-loaded. In its second frame, the film plummeted by more than 70%. It has barely recouped its reported budget at the worldwide box office, and needs to survive more than a few more rounds in order to break even. Faced with mediocre reception from fans, the film is trailing Mortal Kombat II, another video game adaptation that debuted theatrically earlier this year. Meanwhile, it's not in the same league as the blockbuster Super Mario series, which returned with the billion-dollar-grossing The Super Mario Galaxy Movie a few months ago.
The movie in question features an eclectic ensemble cast led by Noah Centineo and Andrew Koji. Both actors have worked in franchise films before, to less-than-encouraging results. Centineo, who broke out as one of the stars of Netflix's To All the Boys trilogy, was cast in the ill-fated DC Extended Universe film Black Adam, which emerged as an infamous critical and commercial disappointment. Koji, on the other hand, played Storm Shadow in the G.I. Joe origin movie Snake Eyes, which grossed less than half of its reported $80 million production budget.

Their new movie together is the would-be franchise-starter Street Fighter, the third major theatrical adaptation of the popular video game series of the same name. It follows a 1994 film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and a 2009 spin-off titled Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. Produced on a reported budget of $82 million, the movie has grossed around $50 million domestically. In its third weekend, Paramount reduced its theater count from 3,575 to 2,825, marking a decrease of 750 locations. The movie holds a 41% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, "The latest iteration of Street Fighter has plenty of affection for its source material and doesn't lack for dizzying style, but its incoherent storytelling and juvenile humor make for a disappointing regression among video game adaptations."
