Almost everyone knows the story of Cinderella. The tale of a young girl oppressed by her evil stepmother and stepsisters who becomes the belle of the ball with a little help from her Fairy Godmother and marries the charming prince has forever been immortalized through countless retellings and adaptations, including Disney's animated classic. However, since it first spread as a folk tale back in Ancient Greece, the focus has always been on the titular Cinderella's side of the story. What if there's more to her supposedly wicked family than has been told? A new Netflix animated original is about to show another perspective and upend the fairytale as old as time in bombastic fashion.
Releasing this November, Steps paints Cinderella's stepsisters in a very different light as it focuses on Lilith, voiced by Beef Emmy winner Ali Wong, who's sick and tired of living in her famous family member's shadow. She decides it's time for her and her sister to shine, swiping the Fairy Godmother's wand and crashing the royal ball, thus derailing the story as it's typically meant to go. Stopping Cinderella's happily ever after has unexpectedly disastrous consequences, paving the way for the evil opportunist Priscilla to swiftly take the throne out from under everyone's noses and impose her tyrannical rule. To make up for her mistakes, Lilith has to join forces with Cinderella to fix things, though this will be far from any typical fairytale adventure.
Netflix released the first official trailer for Steps, and it sees Lilith telling audiences that they "deserve to know the real story" of Cinderella. "And it's a good one!" While all the familiar elements will be there, like the glass slippers, the prince, and the dazzling carriage, it'll also be more action-packed with high-speed chases through the countryside, plenty of danger, revenge plots, and "a really hot troll." Cinderella and her mean girl stepsister will be fighting to save the kingdom through the Screaming Woods against all manner of enemies, from sinister sword-wielding henchmen to biker trolls, imposing supernatural beings, and more. Their greatest challenge, though, may be to save their bond with each other.
Ali Wong Leads a Star-Studded 'Steps' Ensemble
Netflix has been on a roll with its animated slate of late, winning Best Animated Feature at the Oscars last year for Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans' globe-dominating mega hit KPop Demon Hunters and thriving once again this year with the Michael B. Jordan-led Swapped, which is now its eighth most-watched English film of all time. Steps looks to keep up the momentum, and it has a killer cast to do it, too. Opposite Wong as the voice of Cinderella is Oscar nominee Amanda Seyfried, with Stephanie Hsu as the other stepsister, Margot, Bette Midler as the Fairy Godmother, and Nikki Glaser as the wicked Priscilla. Daniel Radcliffe, Young Mazino, Peter Dinklage, and Damian Priest also star in the subversive fantasy family film. Alyce Tzue joins Raya and the Last Dragon co-director John Ripa at the helm, with a script by Ava Tramer, James Madejski, Jen Chuck, Dana Schwartz, and Felicia Ho.
Steps premieres on Netflix on November 20. Check out the trailer in the player above.
