Melissa Barrera's Vampire Hit Becomes a Global Streaming Smash

Since 2020, fans of vampire movies have been treated to some of the best and most inventive examples of their genre. The highlight of these is, of course, Ryan Coogler's beloved horror musical Sinners, which completed the rare feat of breaking free from its genre chains and becoming a hit with the Academy. At the 98th Academy Awards, Sinners would miss out on the Best Picture prize to One Battle After Another, Paul Thomas Anderson's timely masterpiece.

However, it did take home an impressive four Golden Statues, with the Michael B. Jordan-led flick winning Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Actor for the aforementioned star. Sinners is, without doubt, the shining light of the vampire genre, perhaps of this century so far, but there have still been plenty more bloodthirsty examples in the genre worth celebrating, one of which is currently proving a quiet favorite on the global streaming charts.

The film in question is 2024's Abigail, an intelligent, twisted horror-comedy starring the brilliant Melissa Barrera, as she continues her bid for the modern scream queen crown. The film is directed by Radio Silence duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who deliver their typical gory explosion of comedy and horror in this underrated gem, which was penned by Stephen Shields and Guy Busick. The titular centuries-old vampire posing as a 12-year-old girl is portrayed by Alisha Weir, who delivers a breakout performance that earned her a Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Young Performer nomination. Two years later, Abigail is currently one of the ten most-streamed movies on Netflix in the world.

The prolific duo of Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett have already blessed 2026 with guts, gore, and plenty of laughs, as they returned to one of their best movies with the sequel Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. Samara Weaving gets back into her blood-soaked wedding dress, ready to be hunted by a new batch of characters played by Elijah Wood, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Shawn Hatosy, Néstor Carbonell, Kevin Durand, and even David Cronenberg. At the box office, the movie earned a global haul of $43 million.
