Hollywood veteran Mel Gibson is no stranger to an epic feat of crowd-pleasing filmmaking. From his work behind the camera on the religious-themed World War II movie Hacksaw Ridge or as director, producer, and star of the multi-Academy Award-winning Braveheart, Gibson has made a name for himself as a key figure in some of Hollywood's most ambitious projects. In 2004, Gibson stole headlines once again with the controversial film of his career, The Passion of the Christ, which to this day angers certain conservative sections of cinephiles.
After more than two decades, Gibson is putting the final pieces together on a shock follow-up to his most controversial film, which recently returned to theaters in stunning 4K with Dolby Atmos sound. The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One, the first half of Gibson's follow-up, is being described as his "most ambitious filmmaking achievement" and "the largest faith film ever brought to the screen." Originally scheduled for release on March 26, 2027, the follow-up was postponed to May 6, 2027, with the Johnny Depp-led action thriller Day Drinker taking its place.
Before The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One makes its big screen splash in May next year, Gibson fans have been getting in the mood by catching one of his most successful forays into the sci-fi and horror genres. The film in question is Signs, which stars Gibson as former Episcopal priest Graham Hess, whose life is turned upside down when crop circles start to appear across the globe, and alien life arrives on Earth. Considered a masterpiece in the blending of sci-fi and horror and one of the best films in the mixed catalog of M. Night Shyamalan, Signs is a film everyone should watch at least once. Many currently are, as the film is one of the ten most-streamed on Peacock in the U.S.
Who Else Starred in 'Signs'?
Gibson wasn't alone in the stacked cast for Signs, with Shyamalan still able to entice Hollywood's best after his success with The Sixth Sense just three years prior. The film also features Joaquin Phoenix as Merrill Hess, Graham's younger brother and former minor league baseball player; Rory Culkin as Morgan Hess; Abigail Breslin in her breakout role as Bo Hess; and Cherry Jones as Officer Caroline Paski. Against a budget of $72 million, Signs was a huge success thanks to strong word-of-mouth and made more than $400 million at the box office.
