Director Matt Reeves has been dealing with a personal tragedy, leading to a delay in production on The Batman Part II. Weeks into production on the film, Reeves had to step back from day-to-day work after a further personal setback. Steven Soderbergh is now stepping in to help complete Reeves' vision, with Reeves expected to return to oversee post-production on the highly anticipated superhero movie. The filmmaker had established himself as one of the most respected voices in major studio filmmaking even before taking the reins of the Batman franchise. Arguably his most acclaimed big-budget epic is now streaming for free in the United States, just waiting for fans of Reeves' work to revisit. But they'll have to hurry, as the film is going to be removed from the platform soon.
Released in 2014, the film served as a follow-up to a major sci-fi reboot directed by Rupert Wyatt. Honoring Wyatt's work on the first film, Reeves took his sequel to another level, both in terms of narrative scale and thematic depth. The movie proved to be an even bigger hit, grossing more than $710 million worldwide on a reported budget of around $235 million. Andy Serkis reprised his role from the previous film, with new cast members including Jason Clarke, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Keri Russell, Gary Oldman, and Toby Kebbell.
