The Marvel Cinematic Universe will take a big turn this year as Doom (Robert Downey Jr.) arrives in Avengers: Doomsday. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the film will usher in a new beginning for the universe. Though it's the TV side of the MCU that has held the fort in the past few years, with series like Loki, Daredevil: Born Again, Moon Knight, Agatha All Along, and more, all giving fans a balance of good character arcs and storytelling.

Earlier this year, the Yahya Abdul-Mateen II-starring Wonder Man gave fans something new. Created by Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, the show follows struggling Hollywood actor Simon Williams (Abdul-Mateen II) as he tries to land a potentially career-changing role in a remake of the fictional superhero movie Wonder Man, and, in the process, befriends Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley). The series gave us a rare and very meta glimpse into what a superpowered being could do in Hollywood.

Wonder Man garnered both critics' and fans' love and praise. For its gripping narrative and compelling performances, it earned a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Further, it garnered a Primetime Emmy nomination for lead actor Abdul-Mateen II. The show's success achieved a rare feat of scoring a second season renewal until it was unceremoniously cancelled. It came so suddenly that neither fans nor experts could pinpoint a specific reason, but it's assumed that Disney's changing strategies, viewership drop, and scheduling conflicts seem to have taken the show down. At the time, it was reported that the writers' room was never opened for the second season, and the staff had been released to pursue other projects. However, recently, Marvel TV boss Brad Winderbaum left the door open for Wonder Man's return.

Wonder Man Could Return in a Future Project

“I fought for the show. We all did. Everyone at Marvel wanted to see it happen,” Winderbaum told the Brandon Davis Show. “Maybe I'm an idiot, but I still have hope that by some miracle there's a way to do something down the road.” Marvel often brings characters back for projects where they fit, as Ms. Marvel went from her own Disney+ show to The Marvels' ensemble. Something of the sort could be possible in Wonder Man's future too. Winderbaum hinted at shows like Daredevil, which was purely saved thanks to fans' love, “But, look at Daredevil. I mean, look at Charlie. The fans literally saved Daredevil – #SaveDaredevil.”
