It appears that Mark Wahlberg's focus on streaming originals has dented his box-office appeal. The actor's films have grossed more than $3 billion at the domestic box office, but he hasn't delivered a theatrical hit as a leading man since 2018's Instant Family, which grossed $67 million domestically. Aside from Uncharted and Transformers: The Last Knight, none of his movies has been able to top the $100 million milestone domestically since Daddy's Home 2, released nearly a decade ago. Over the past decade, Wahlberg has starred in more than half a dozen streaming tentpoles, while his theatrical movies have topped out in the $20-million range. His latest theatrical release, however, fell short of even that mark. It has now debuted on the PVOD market, where it will hope to redeem itself in the coming weeks.

The movie in question was released in theaters by Paramount in early September. Inspired by a true story, it features Wahlberg as Gregory Scarpa, a Mafia gangster who became an FBI informant in the 1960s. The film also stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as an FBI agent who worked with Scarpa, alongside a supporting cast that includes Nicole Beharie, Giancarlo Esposito, David Strathairn, and Josh Lucas. Directed by Elegance Bratton, the film received mixed reviews and appears to have settled at a 44% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, its 88% audience score bodes well for its post-theatrical run.

Here's How Much Mark Wahlberg's Crime Movie Grossed at the Box Office

We're talking, of course, about the period true-crime drama By Any Means, which debuted in more than 2,900 domestic theaters in early September and, by the end of the month, was playing in just over 150 locations. The movie grossed around $17 million during its box-office run, against a reported budget of $29 million. It is now available on the PVOD market, having debuted digitally on October 20, alongside the acclaimed Western drama The Weight, starring Russell Crowe and Ethan Hawke. According to FlixPatrol, By Any Means debuted at the number five spot on the domestic Amazon chart and at the number two spot on iTunes. Both leaderboards are currently topped by Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
