For over 40 years, Kelsey Grammer has been synonymous with one character: a lovable, and loving, yet pompous and infuriating, but altogether magnificent man named Frasier Crane. Across three separate shows, and across four decades, Grammer has brought wit to our screens in the form of television's most memorable psychiatrist. But all good things must come to an end, and Grammer is officially moving on.
Grammer has officially announced that he will make his feature film directorial debut with So Help Me God, an ambitious Civil War epic inspired by the true story of Union soldier Albert Townsend. The actor revealed that the film will be produced by Mark Huffam, whose previous credits include Saving Private Ryan, Game of Thrones, and The Martian. And he intends to do it justice, as well, complete with real cannons, 100 horses, period-accurate military uniforms and more.
What Is Kelsey Grammer's New Movie About?
In announcing the project, Grammer explained why Townsend's story had inspired him to step behind the camera for his first feature film.
What I found was more than an injustice waiting to be corrected. It was a story of friendship and extraordinary courage: an unassuming young man becoming a soldier who held his ground, and his principles, under fire. That’s a story worth telling on the largest possible scale.
Grammer also confirmed that they would be seeking crowdfunding for the project via Republic, as it was officially introduced at the Medal of Honor Heritage Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The announcement was attended by Civil War historian Brad Quinlin, members of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and representatives of Civil War Roundtables.
Grammer is also lending his support to Townsend's descendants as they continue their campaign to secure a posthumous Medal of Honor for their ancestor. Having been moved immensely by the Townsend story, Grammer is keen to do it justice and deliver a picture that moves the audience as well as inspires.
This picture is about friendship, love, and honor — and common people rising to accomplish extraordinary things. I want to give that story everything it deserves. I hope you will lift the banner with us.
In addition to So Help Me God, Grammer is set to reprise his role as Hank McCoy, AKA Beast, in Avengers: Doomsday, along with several of his fellow X-Men. A release date for So Help Me God has not yet been announced. Further details about the film and its investment campaign are available through the official website.
