Keanu Reeves’ Biggest Genre Swing Since ‘John Wick’ Is Officially a Streaming Hit

Keanu Reeves is best known worldwide for his action roles; even audiences who don't know his extensive filmography recognize him from The Matrix franchise, which changed how movies are made and how viewers understand them, becoming a worldwide phenomenon with a solid fanbase. He’s also well known for the John Wick franchise, where a fifth movie is in the works. But Reeves never shies away from experimenting with his roles, be it voicing Duke Caboom in Toy Story 5, playing a troubled Hollywood star in Jonah Hill’s Outcome, or appearing in The SpongeBob Movie, among others.

Last year, he played a budget guardian angel in Aziz Ansari’s Good Fortune. We follow Arj, a down-on-his-luck documentary film editor in Los Angeles struggling to pay rent and forced to survive as a gig worker. When he is hired as a temporary assistant by Jeff (Seth Rogen), an incredibly wealthy tech entrepreneur and venture capitalist, things take a turn. Seeing Arj’s misery, Gabriel (Reeves), a junior-level guardian angel, decides to intervene. He initiates a life-swap between Arj and Jeff, expecting Arj to realize that massive wealth comes with its own stresses and that "money can't buy happiness” but it doesn’t go as planned.

Along with Reeves as Gabriel, Ansari as Arj, and Rogen as Jeff, the movie also cast Sandra Oh as another angel, Martha, and Keke Palmer as Arj’s colleague, Elena. The movie is a fun, light-hearted watch that shines a light on the lives of gig workers while also making you think. It won both fans' and critics’ hearts, with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 79% and 80%, respectively, owing to its themes of the suffering of gig workers and turning the “money can’t buy happiness” trope on its head for comedic purposes. It was a modest performer at the box office, earning $26 million worldwide because it fell slightly short of its $30 million budget. Nonetheless, its streaming reception has been great.

Good Fortune is winning hearts on Prime Video, sitting at the eighth spot on the streamer’s top 10 list, as per FlixPatrol. The feature stands tall among Lili Reinhart’s The Love Hypothesis, Roberto Sneider’s Looking Through Water, Rami Malek’s The Amateur, Nicholas Galitzine’s Masters of the Universe, and more. Reeves will next be seen in features like Constantine 2, John Wick 5, Sonic the Hedgehog 4, and more.
