Jason Statham’s ‘Mutiny’ Hits No. 1 on Prime Video After Weak Box Office

Jason Statham’s newest film is already finding redemption after a rough start at the box office. The action star began the year in Shelter, one of the best-reviewed films of his career, but despite those reviews, the movie never gained traction in theaters. Shelter has since become a massive hit on Starz after it dominated VOD charts on Prime Video. Most fans expected to see Statham reprise his role as Adam Clay in a sequel to The Beekeeper before the end of this year, but Amazon announced earlier this year that the film won’t arrive in theaters until January 15, 2027. Statham is also expected to have a sizable role in Fast Forever, though the film faces numerous obstacles before its 2028 launch date.

After Shelter’s box office misfire earlier this year, Statham didn’t have to wait long for redemption with his new movie, Mutiny. The film opened in theaters on August 21 with a $40 million budget, but after a few weeks it has earned only $26 million worldwide, leaving it far short of break-even. After fewer than three full weeks in theaters, Lionsgate released Mutiny on VOD platforms this week, a move that has proved right so far: the film immediately rose to No. 1 on Prime Video’s most-purchased list. That should help it recover some of its lost budget, but likely not enough to avoid being labeled a flop.

Is ‘Mutiny’ Worth Watching?

Mutiny is certainly worth watching for fans of Jason Statham-style action. While critics gave it a poor 50% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences mostly embraced it with an 86% Popcornmeter score. The official synopsis for Mutiny, which also stars Peaky Blinders veteran Annabelle Wallis, reads: “In Mutiny, after witnessing his billionaire boss's murder and being framed for the crime, Cole Reed (Jason Statham) boards a cargo ship on a one-man crusade to avenge his boss's death only to discover an international conspiracy.”
