After starring in two action movies, Jason Statham's year is officially over, but fans continue to revisit some of his older classics on streaming. Statham opened the year by starring in Shelter, which was one of the best-reviewed movies of his entire career. This unfortunately didn't translate to success at the box office, though, as Shelter eked out only $56 million at the box office against a $50 million budget — it needed around $100 million to break even. Statham sought out box office redemption with the release of his next 2026 film, Mutiny, but it also struggled at the box office despite a more modest budget. The film grossed only $30 million at the box office against a $40 million budget, and it marked the second time this year that a Statham-led actioner failed to reach its break-even point.
Jason Statham has been around starring in action movies long enough that there have been plenty of success stories but also plenty of flops. However, more often than not, when he teams up with director Guy Ritchie it usually leads to a movie being a smash hit. This wasn't the case back in 2023, though, when the duo worked together on the epic spy caper, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, which feels like a wacky mash-up of James Bond and Quentin Tarantino with epic action scenes and stylistic choices that stay with you long after the final credits. Three years after Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre failed to get off the ground at the box office, grossing only $48 million against a $50 million budget, the film has found new life as a VOD sensation on platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV.
What Is 'Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre' About?
In addition to Jason Statham, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre also stars Aubrey Plaza, Cary Elwes, Josh Hartnett, and Hugh Grant. The official synopsis for the film, which holds scores of 52% from critics and 82% from audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, reads as follows:
“In the film, super spy Orson Fortune (Jason Statham) must track down and stop the sale of a deadly new weapons technology wielded by billionaire arms broker Greg Simmonds (Hugh Grant). Reluctantly teamed with some of the world’s best operatives (Aubrey Plaza, Cary Elwes, Bugzy Malone), Fortune and his crew recruit Hollywood's biggest movie star Danny Francesco (Josh Hartnett) to help them on their globe-trotting undercover mission to save the world.”
