January has had a facelift in recent years, thanks mainly to Jason Statham. The month had long been seen as a dumping ground for movies studios didn't have much faith in, but in 2024, Statham shattered expectations with The Beekeeper. The action movie, directed by David Ayer, grossed more than $160 million worldwide. Statham and Ayer repeated the feat in January 2025 with A Working Man, which grossed nearly $100 million worldwide. Both films received mostly positive critical reactions and have cemented themselves as fan favorites with 92% and 87% audience scores on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, respectively. Statham will hope to level up with The Beekeeper 2, which recently debuted its first teaser ahead of a January 2027 release. However, there was a blip this year, when Statham's annual January release underperformed theatrically.
The movie in question has since redeemed itself on streaming. Like so many of his other movies, it received an excellent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, which has no doubt served it well during its home-video run. Movies with higher audience scores tend to have longer legs on the PVOD and streaming charts, and Statham especially has proven time and time again that he can pull crowds both in theaters and at home. Believe it or not, he hasn't starred in a streaming original so far, even though his movies do so well on home video. For instance, his latest theatrical release, Mutiny, has spent around 40 days on the domestic Amazon leaderboard, according to FlixPatrol. Also featuring Annabelle Wallis, the movie grossed $30 million worldwide against a reported budget of $40 million.
Jason Statham's Popularity on PVOD Remains Undiminished
The January release, Shelter, fared only slightly better. It made $53 million globally against a reported budget of $50 million. Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, Shelter follows an ex-secret agent whose past catches up with him while he's hiding out on a remote island. Matters are further complicated when he's forced to protect a young girl who happens to be on the island when enemies come knocking on his door. The film holds a 64% critics' score and an 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, "Classing up an overdone premise with professional execution, Shelter is highly derivative of previous Jason Statham action vehicles but lean and mean enough to forgive the recycled tropes." The movie has now spent 150 days on the domestic Starz chart, according to FlixPatrol.
