Over the years, actor Jason Statham has built a solid fan base with numerous action roles. He is celebrated worldwide for his slick stunts and stoic characters as he crafts a niche for himself. Fans are now gearing up to see him next in The Beekeeper 2, a sequel to his collaboration with director David Ayer, which will bring him back as former government assassin Adam Clay. With Nobody 2 director Timo Tjahjanto at the helm of the sequel, the feature will go up a notch on its action while bringing out a new side of Adam.
Earlier this year, Statham came out with another actioner that sees him as a lone wolf on a mission to save a young girl. While the feature didn't do a breakout business at the box office, it sure found its audience on streaming like many movies this year. The feature in question is Shelter, directed by Greenland-famous director Ric Roman Waugh. Shelter sees Statham as a former British government assassin, Michael Mason, who now lives in self-imposed exile on a remote island. Things take a turn when he rescues a young girl from a violent storm, setting off a chain of events that forces him out of seclusion to protect her from enemies tied to his past.
As with many new movies, the film struggled to bring people to theaters, earning roughly $53 million at the box office against a $50 million production budget, but it became a huge streaming success. While it was criticized for a highly formulaic, cliché-ridden script, the grounded, practical stunt work, lack of heavy CGI, and Statham's surprisingly emotional performance, which took both fans and critics by surprise, were universally lauded. While the critics gave it a 64% Rotten Tomatoes rating, the fans were more lenient with an 87% rating, deeming it a "confidently crafted vehicle for its ever-reliable star," in their consensus.
Shelter Returns to Streaming Charts
Shelter has returned to Prime Video's top 10 global charts, according to FlixPatrol. It stands at the tenth spot on the list behind films like Spider-Man's fourth installment Brand New Day, horror favorite of the season Obsession, Steven Spielberg's Disclosure Day, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman's Practical Magic 2, and more. Check out the feature for credible performances, themes of isolation, creating bonds, and leaving trauma behind.
