When it comes to making great sci-fi movies, few directors are operating at the same level as James Cameron. The only few directors in the same air as Cameron are Ridley Scott, Christopher Nolan, and Steven Spielberg, but Cameron has added more to his career box office total than any of them except Spielberg. While Cameron's work on the Avatar movies are the first that come to mind for modern audiences, he's also famous for his work directing Titanic, which is the sixth-highest-grossing movie of all time. What makes this even more impressive is that it was released all the way back in 1997, so when factoring in inflation, it earned much more than just $2.2 billion. Cameron's first Avatar movie is still the highest-grossing in history, with a lead of more than $100 million over Avengers: Endgame.

James Cameron took more than 10 years between the release of the first and second Avatar movies, but thanks to intense demand from fans, he was able to cut this gap down to just three years between the second and third films. Just one week before Christmas last year, James Cameron delivered Avatar: Fire and Ash into theaters around the world, and while the film failed to reach the same box office heights as either of its predecessors, it still grossed $1.48 billion at the box office, making it one of the highest-grossing movies in history. Avatar: Fire and Ash was added to Disney Plus earlier in the summer, where it has since found a home in the top 10 for 90 days now. It doesn't look poised to give up its coveted streaming spot anytime soon, either.

Is James Cameron Still Making 'Avatar 4'?

Neither James Cameron or Disney has yet to come out and confirm if Avatar 4 is still moving forward, or if the film will be lost to oblivion. Cameron said in the weeks before Avatar 3's premiere that the next sequel was far from a guarantee, and he's also been public about his desire to figure out a way to make the movies quicker and for less money. Avatar 4 is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on December 21, 2029, but only time will tell if it will hit this date or be delayed, or possibly even canceled altogether.
