There are very few Christmas movies quite as beloved as Home Alone, and more than three decades after Macaulay Culkin first started terrorizing the Wet Bandits, the holiday classic remains an essential part of the festive season. Disney has already tried revisiting the franchise several times, but you know what? Sometimes, instead of trying to carry on a story, it's best to stick to what made it so magical in the first place. And that's exactly what's happening, as Disney is remaking Home Alone with their own spin.
Disney has officially unveiled the first trailer for Mickey's Home Alone, a brand-new animated holiday special inspired by Home Alone, which premieres November 26 on Disney Jr. before arriving on Disney+ on November 27. The special will see Mickey Mouse and Pluto accidentally left behind when their friends head off on a Christmas adventure, forcing the pair to defend their holiday dinner from a pair of mischievous intruders.
In the special, he can't wait to spend Christmas at home, but Mickey's plans take a turn when Minnie surprises him and the gang with tickets to spend Christmas at a world-famous Ice Palace. In the morning rush to make it out the door, Mickey and Pluto are left behind and home alone, and must protect their Christmas dinner from two feisty villains, a raccoon and a weasel who are after it.
How Successful Is 'Home Alone'?
Enormously. And it made Culkin a very wealthy young man. The first film directed by Chris Columbus and written by John Hughes, became one of the most successful family comedies ever made when it arrived in 1990, earning more than $476 million worldwide, and then Culkin negotiated a huge deal for the sequel. Home Alone 2 was a massive hit, grossing $356 million worldwide on a $28 million budget. While critical reviews were mixed, audiences embraced the higher stakes, bigger budget, and more chaotic slapstick. Culkin told Hot Ones that he had a huge slice of the action:
“I think I own five percent of the net. I also [get] 15 percent of the merchandising. So, if you buy a Talkboy, I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’ll take a percent of that. Thank you very much.’”
He wasn’t joking. Not only did the then-10-year-old earn a staggering $4.5 million for the 1992 sequel — the highest salary ever paid to a child actor at the time — but his contract also included a 15% cut of all merchandising, including sales of the now-iconic Talkboy.
Mickey's Home Alone premieres November 26, 2026, at 6 p.m. ET/PT on Disney Jr., before becoming available to stream on Disney+ on November 27.
