2026 has been a relatively quiet year for Gerard Butler, who did not make much of a splash with his first feature film of the year, Greenland 2: Migration. The original Greenland film, released in 2020, was widely well liked by Butler's many fans, but the sequel failed to live up to expectations. Worse yet, Warner Bros. invested $90 million into the making of Greenland 2: Migration, which proved to be a poor investment when the film grossed only $45 million at the box office, making it one of the biggest bombs of the year. Butler will almost surely return to box office glory next year when he reprises his role as Stoick in the live-action sequel to How to Train Your Dragon. Cate Blanchett is also returning as Valka in the film.
Gerard Butler has been starring in iconic action thrillers and even rom-coms for so many years now that some misfires mixed in with the many hits are only expected. However, one of his movies that vastly exceeded expectations came in 2023 when he teamed up with longtime Luke Cage veteran Mike Colter for Plane, the aptly titled action thriller that grossed nearly $75 million at the box office against a $25 million budget. Not only did Plane earn a Certified Fresh 79% from critics on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, but the movie was also a smash hit with audiences, registering a nearly perfect 94% on the Popcornmeter. Three years later, after being removed from Prime Video and even Netflix, Plane has found a streaming home on the free platform Tubi.
Is 'Plane' Still Getting a Sequel?
It was reported a few years ago that Plane was going to receive a sequel titled Ship, with Mike Colter set to return and star. Butler was involved in the project, but it was believed that he would only produce the feature and not return to his role as Brodie Torrance. Earlier this year, mere weeks before the Plane sequel was scheduled to begin shooting, Butler got cold feet and backed out of the project, which led to the entire movie being scrapped. Butler has yet to break his silence on this. Plane director Jean-François Richet recently helmed the 2026 Jason Statham-led action film, Mutiny.
