Gerard Butler’s $80M Action Thriller Finds New Streaming Home After Netflix Exit

2026 has been quiet for Scottish actor and Hollywood favorite Gerard Butler, with only the relatively underwhelming sequel Greenland 2: Migration released, grossing just half of its reported $90 million budget at the worldwide box office. That quiet year sits between two big blockbusters, the first arriving in summer 2025 when Universal’s How to Train Your Dragon remake earned $650 million globally and drew widespread praise from critics and audiences, with Butler reprising his role as Stoick the Vast.

Thanks to the success of the How to Train Your Dragon remake, a sequel is scheduled for release in June 2027. How to Train Your Dragon 2 will feature Butler, Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Nick Frost, and other favorites from the first installment, with Cate Blanchett added as she reprises her role as Valka Haddock from the animated original. With How to Train Your Dragon 2 still many months away, Butler fans will be looking for a way to pass the time. For many months, that came in the form of a modern Butler gem that also starred O’Shea Jackson Jr. and Pablo Schreiber.

Of course, we’re talking about Den of Thieves. Sadly, it was confirmed that the crime thriller was removed from the Netflix catalog at the end of last month. The action-packed film, which starred Butler as heavy-drinker and gritty crime-solver Nick "Big Nick" O’Brien, had long been a favorite on streaming, regularly performing well against tough competition. The revolving door of streaming struck again, leaving Den of Thieves on the wayside. Thankfully, streaming site Tubi has saved the day, with the film currently available to stream for free.

But will there be a third installment in the chaotic life of Big Nick? Lionsgate has confirmed that a third installment is in development, but news has been relatively quiet since, with production rumored to start later this year.
