From Classical to Mugham: Montreux Hosts Azerbaijan's Musical Heritage

From centuries-old mugham to opera, jazz and traditional dance, Azerbaijan takes centre stage as the Montreux-Vevey festival celebrates its 80th anniversary.

Azerbaijan's musical traditions took centre stage in Montreux as the Swiss city recently celebrated the 80th anniversary of the Septembre Musical Montreux-Vevey festival.

Around 200 artists, led by the State Symphony Orchestra, performed works by Uzeyir Hajibeyli, the father of Azerbaijani classical music, alongside opera, mugham, jazz and national dance.

The programme brought together different facets of Azerbaijan's musical identity, from classical to contemporary. For the performers, it was also an opportunity to share Azerbaijan's rich musical heritage at one of the world's most iconic music venues.
