Younger audiences who tuned into Yellowstone would no doubt be interested in revisiting Kevin Costner's past work as an icon of the Western genre. While the core demographic of Taylor Sheridan's magnum opus is probably aware of Costner's legacy, others should know that his masterpiece was added to a new streaming platform's domestic library this October. The movie in question was released at a time when Westerns were thought to have become unfashionable, but it defied the odds to emerge as a massive box-office hit and an awards season favorite.

The movie was released in 1990, paving the way for the handful of other Westerns from that decade that have stood the test of time — Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, and the cult classics Tombstone and The Quick and the Dead. Costner's film faced an uphill climb to get made, because most studios balked at its length and genre. It was eventually produced for a reported $22 million, cobbled together by selling off international distribution rights. Decades later, Costner embarked upon a similarly ambitious project — a four-part Western saga whose first two installments were partially self-funded.
