2026 has been a quiet year for Tom Hardy, at least until a few weeks ago, when he finally settled back into his role as Harry Da Souza in the second season of MobLand. There was controversy surrounding both Hardy and the show earlier in the summer when reports broke that he had been fired from the show after filming his Season 2 scenes due to a rift that had formed between him and one of the leading producers. This has since been debunked, and not only has MobLand been officially renewed for Season 3, but it's already been confirmed that Hardy will be back in the highly anticipated third season. He may only have one Oscar nomination to his name, but Hardy has still starred in some of the most iconic and enduring action and crime thrillers of all time.
One genre where Hardy has been especially present throughout his career is sci-fi. Whether it's his recurring role as Eddie Brock in the Venom movies, or his one-off performances in films like Inception, Hardy has proven he can hang with the best of the best when it comes to sci-fi. All the way back in 2015, Hardy teamed up with Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult for one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made, Mad Max: Fury Road, which was written and directed by George Miller. Mad Max: Fury Road grossed over $380 million at the box office against a $150 million budget, but it's still puzzling to some how it didn't gross more. Mad Max: Fury Road no longer has a streaming home in America, but there's such a desire to watch it that the film has surged back into the top 10 in several countries on VOD platforms like Prime Video.
Did 'Furiosa' Flop at the Box Office?
In 2024, George Miller expanded the Mad Max universe with the prequel film, Furiosa. Starring Anya Taylor-Joy as a young Furiosa and Chris Hemsworth as the evil Dementus, Furiosa was expected to be one of the biggest sci-fi hits of the year, but the film bombed at the box office. Furiosa came into theaters carrying a $168 million budget, leaving it with an estimated break-even point of over $300 million, but it only managed to scrape together $174 million at the global box office.
