Right now is a great time to hoard Leo Woodall stock, and not just because he recently starred in one of the most underrated Apple TV spy thrillers, Prime Target. Woodall has been tapped to star as an Elf named Halvard in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, which is opening in theaters on December 17, 2027. He was originally rumored to be in the running to replace Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn, but that role went to Jamie Dornan. Woodall also recently teamed up with Russell Crowe for one of the most underrated WWII movies of the last few years, Nuremberg, which is now streaming on Netflix after grossing almost $75 million at the global box office. Another of his recent movies with an Oscar-winner that flew under the radar earlier this year is soon to seek redemption on one of the biggest streaming platforms in the world.
After earning the honor of being the Official Selection at several 2025 Film Festivals such as Sundance, TIFF, Telluride, and even BFI, Leo Woodall's Tuner officially premiered in theaters back in May. The film grossed $14 million during an extremely limited run at the box office before going on to become one of the most popular movies of the year on VOD platforms like Prime Video. This afternoon, Black Bear officially announced that Tuner will begin streaming on Paramount Plus one week from today, on September 21. The film never quite broke through at the box office due to its limited run, but it's set to explode on streaming next week with one of the biggest debuts of the year.
What Is 'Tuner' About?
Black Bear's official synopsis for Tuner, which holds near-perfect marks of 94% from critics and 93% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, reads as follows:
“In Tuner, Academy Award-winning director Daniel Roher's first narrative feature, Leo Woodall stars as a gifted young piano tuner whose heightened sense of hearing draws the attention of criminals, who see his talents as useful for opening safes as well as for tuning Steinways. With his once-promising musical career over, he works across New York with his mentor Harry Horowitz (Academy Award-winner Dustin Hoffman), encountering a range of characters, including composition student Ruthie (Havana Rose Liu), with whom he forges an unexpected connection. Niki's safecracking work threatens his budding romance with Ruthie and pulls him into increasingly dangerous territory.”
Additional cast members for Tuner include two-time Oscar-winner Dustin Hoffman and Havana Rose Liu, who is best known for her roles in Bottoms and No Exit. Director Daniel Roher wrote the script for Tuner with Robert Ramsay.
