Many fan-favorite actors have taken their turn at playing James Bond, bringing a personal touch to the character, including Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan, and Timothy Dalton. With each actor, the character of Bond grew deadlier, sharper, and more exciting. The franchise's ability to reinvent itself for a new audience has been the secret sauce that has kept it relevant for decades.

However, each era of James Bond has also benefited from its director. Director John Glen's fingerprints are all over the movies, having directed five films in the long-running franchise, including For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy, and A View to a Kill, among others. Then there's Guy Hamilton, who brought in larger-than-life gadgets and iconic villains. Lewis Gilbert introduced grand spectacles and even sent Bond to space with films like The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker. With Casino Royale, Martin Campbell single-handedly changed the face of the franchise in the Daniel Craig era, while Cary Joji Fukunaga became the first American director to culminate it with No Time to Die.

Now that Amazon has bought the creative rights to the franchise, James Bond 26 is going to be a very different movie and will kickstart a new era for the franchise. The studio has assembled a brilliant team to bring the film to the big screen. Powerhouse producers Amy Pascal (Sony's Spider-Man films) and David Heyman (Harry Potter franchise) are behind the project. Steven Knight — the man behind Peaky Blinders, House of Guinness, and Taboo — is penning the script. As for the director, Amazon has hired Denis Villeneuve, the mind behind the Dune franchise and Blade Runner 2049. He has come on board with a single-picture deal to direct Bond 26.

Why Did Denis Villeneuve Join James Bond?

Villeneuve brought Timothée Chalamet-led Dune to life, and over the course of two movies has made it a global sensation. Speaking of finishing Dune: Part Three and moving on to James Bond, he revealed, “I said, ‘Maybe it’s a good idea to go back to this project (Dune 3), not out of nostalgia, not because I miss it, but the opposite — I’m tired of it,’” he told Empire Magazine. He continued,

“I thought, ‘When it’s done, I need a very powerful rocket to pull me away from Arrakis.’ When I was asked to do the next Bond, I said: ‘Okay, this is what I need.’”
