We're in an era where arguably the biggest draws are not movie stars but a filmmaker and a fictional character. This summer both operated at the peak of their popularity. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the fourth installment of the superhero series starring Tom Holland, grossed around $2.5 billion worldwide, despite signs audiences had lost interest in the genre as a whole. Around the same time, Christopher Nolan delivered his biggest-ever hit, The Odyssey, which outgrossed previous films such as The Dark Knight and Oppenheimer. Remarkably, The Odyssey has almost doubled the global haul of Inception. The movie still hasn't landed on the PVOD market, given Nolan's strict theatrical exclusivity demands, but audiences can revisit one of his past hits this October on Netflix.
The movie in question was released in 2006, between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Nolan made a similar diversion before The Dark Knight Rises as well; that was when he directed Inception. The 2006 film reunited him with his Batman Begins star Christian Bale, who was joined by Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansson, and Rebecca Hall. The film is now considered one of his most underrated gems. Even though it was a solid box-office hit at the time, there's a sense that it would've been much bigger had it been released now.
