Christopher Nolan keeps pushing the boundaries of filmmaking. Be it using IMAX cameras to film his movies and enhancing the technology for Oppenheimer, the use of practical effects to minimize CGI and VFX, or creating real-world sets and using in-camera time manipulation for Tenet, the fan-favorite director always brings practical techniques to convey the intellectual themes of his stories. And fans love that kind of filmmaking.
After winning an Oscar for Oppenheimer, all eyes were on his latest release, The Odyssey. It's been a passion project for Nolan, and marks Matt Damon's first movie as his leading man after collaborating on several projects. It has an all-star cast including Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, as well as talents like Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, and John Leguizamo among others. Nolan presented the Greek epic in a non-linear, grounded psychological action-drama. We follow Odysseus on a perilous, decade-long journey home to Ithaca following the fall of Troy. The narrative adapts classic trials — including encounters with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the enchantress Circe, and the deadly Sirens — but strips away literal divine interference, portraying the challenges through a realistic, visceral lens that was appreciated by fans and critics alike. Meanwhile, back in Ithaca, over a hundred aggressive suitors occupy Odysseus's estate, attempting to force Penelope (Hathaway) into marriage.
The movie touches upon the themes of postwar trauma as Odysseus’ journey home serves as an internal exploration of a war-torn veteran suffering from severe psychological trauma and grief. Further, the ending hints at ending the cycle of violence. Owing to its brilliant craft and narrative, the movie earned a 98% Rotten Tomatoes score. Further, it became the 11th highest-grossing film of all time, earning $1.784 billion worldwide. That makes The Odyssey Nolan's highest-grossing film and the highest-grossing R-rated film ever.
