Marvel spent years opening up the Multiverse, and now it looks increasingly determined to smash the whole thing to pieces. Avengers: Endgame — Encore opened in theaters today, armed with new material designed to lead directly into Avengers: Doomsday, and one sequence in particular suggests there could be some fairly brutal goodbyes ahead. If you’ve grown attached to Marvel’s various alternate realities, maybe don’t get too comfortable.

The new footage returns to the TVA, where Mobius, O.B. and Casey discover thousands of incursions spreading across the Multiverse. Most significantly, Earth-10005 — the universe containing Fox’s X-Men and Deadpool movies — is shown on a collision course with the mysterious Earth-1127, with the two realities apparently firing missiles at one another as they attempt to survive the incursion. Other universes shown by the TVA have already been destroyed. Earth-10005 should be very familiar to MCU fans. Deadpool & Wolverine previously established the designation as Wade Wilson’s home reality, connecting decades of Fox’s Marvel movies directly to the MCU’s wider Multiverse, but now, that universe appears to be heading toward catastrophe just as several of its most recognizable mutants prepare to return in Doomsday.

The X-Men Are Returning in 'Avengers: Doomsday'

The development becomes particularly interesting because Avengers: Doomsday is bringing back several stars from Fox’s X-Men franchise. Patrick Stewart (Star Trek: Picard) returns as Charles Xavier alongside Ian McKellen (The Lord of the Rings) as Magneto, James Marsden (Sonic the Hedgehog) as Cyclops, Rebecca Romijn (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds) as Mystique, Alan Cumming (The Traitors) as Nightcrawler, Kelsey Grammer (Frasier) as Beast, and Channing Tatum (Magic Mike) as Gambit. Marvel, of course, is starting its own take on the X-Men, due for release in 2028, so this could be a particularly graceful/explosive way to end the Fox universe once and for all, while giving its characters a final farewell.

The wider cast includes Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) as Doctor Doom, Chris Hemsworth (Thor) as Thor, Anthony Mackie (Captain America: Brave New World) as Sam Wilson, Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us) as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby (The Fantastic Four: First Steps) as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things) as Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear) as Ben Grimm.
