One of the longest-running film franchises in history is currently in limbo, following two failed reboot attempts in one decade. The latest attempt was made in 2019 and marketed as a long-awaited homecoming for the franchise's creator. However, past endorsements made by the illustrious filmmaker about earlier installments dampened the impact of his return. The movie bombed at the box office despite having received mostly positive reviews, leading its star to declare that the series, at least in its current form, had outstayed its welcome. This wasn't the first time that the star expressed dismay about how one of the franchise's films had turned out. He previously admitted a 2015 movie in the series entered production with a subpar script; the film in question is currently streaming for free in the United States, but only for a little while longer.
Despite its difficult production and poor reception, it remains a solid box-office hit. The movie grossed $440 million worldwide against a reported budget of $155 million, emerging as the franchise's second-biggest hit. The franchise began in 1984 with a culture-defining hit that both cemented its star as an action hero and announced the arrival of its director. We're talking about Arnold Schwarzenegger and James Cameron, and their cult classic sci-fi movie The Terminator. Schwarzenegger and Cameron returned some years later with an even more influential sequel, Terminator 2: Judgment Day. A third installment starring Schwarzenegger — Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines — was released without Cameron's involvement in the early 2000s.
