Dolph Lundgren came out of nowhere to become one of the biggest action stars of the 1980s, in more ways than one. Now, a new documentary is looking into his rise and fall and rise: Dolph: Unbreakable. It hits video on demand and digital next week, but before it does, Collider is proud to present an exclusive clip from Dolph: Unbreakable featuring fellow 1980s icon Arnold Schwarzenegger.
A native of Sweden, Lundgren had a degree in chemical engineering in his homeland, and planned to study at MIT before his powerful physique got him noticed by actor and singer Grace Jones, who hired him as her bodyguard. His first small acting role came alongside Jones in the James Bond movie A View to a Kill; that earned him the attention of Sylvester Stallone, who cast him as the invincible Russian boxer Ivan Drago in Rocky IV. More action roles followed, most notably the role of He-Man in 1987's Masters of the Universe; Lundgren had a winking cameo in this summer's new adaptation of the property. However, he eventually faded from the spotlight. In recent years, Lundgren has battled cancer while returning to prominence.
The new sneak peek from UpStream Flix features words from Schwarzenegger, whose rise to stardom Hollywood hoped to copy with Lundgren; Lundgren, thanks to his European origins, was often compared to Schwarzenegger. Although he never quite reached the same lofty heights as the Austrian colossus, the two have known each other for decades; their paths would eventually cross on-screen in The Expendables series of action movies. You'll be able to catch the rest of the movie when Dolph: Unbreakable hits digital and video-on-demand services on October 6.
Who Are the Creatives Behind 'Dolph: Unbreakable'?
Dolph: Unbreakable was written and directed by Andrew Holmes, who has previously worked on documentaries about bodybuilder Phil Heath, NHL goaltender Grant Fuhr, and prisoner-turned-actor Danny Trejo. In addition to Schwarzenegger, the film also features interviews with Lundgren's friends and family, and collaborators, colleagues, and rivals, including Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Randy Couture. It is produced by Adam Scorgie and Shane Fennessey, and its executive producers include director Holmes and Lundgren himself.
