One of the most celebrated music video directors of his generation, Romain Gavras, is back with a new feature film this week. The movie boasts his biggest cast yet and marks his English-language debut, after a string of French-language films across a variety of genres. The new movie, a satirical comedy, was released on Netflix in the United States this week. Netflix also acquired Gavras' 2022 feature, the operatic action thriller Athena, which competed for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. Gavras' new movie comes on the heels of the disastrous political satire Digger, with which it shares several themes. Unfortunately, the new movie has also received divisive reviews, but its starry cast has propelled it to early success on the Netflix viewership charts.
The movie features Chris Evans as a movie star who is taken hostage by a group of radicals convinced that humanity can be saved by sacrificing three people. The leader of the radical group is played by Anya Taylor-Joy, while the eclectic ensemble includes Sam Richardson, Ambika Mod, Vincent Cassel, Salma Hayek, John Malkovich, and Charli XCX. The movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2025, and will be released on Netflix only in the United States and France. It will get a theatrical release in several European regions, including the United Kingdom.
