Having lost a significant chunk of its theater count and been made available on the PVOD market, a new psychological thriller looks set to conclude its box-office run with a solid but unspectacular haul. The movie was expected to hit benchmarks set by recent hits such as It Ends with Us and The Housemaid, which grossed $350 million and $400 million at the worldwide box office, respectively. Like those films, the new thriller is based on a bestseller with a massive built-in audience. However, even David Fincher's similarly targeted Gone Girl grossed more than twice as much as the new film.

The film stars Anne Hathaway in the lead role, following a terrific 2026 run that includes movies such as The Odyssey and The Devil Wears Prada 2. Combined, those two films have grossed more than $2.5 billion worldwide. More recently, Hathaway starred in the sci-fi thriller The End of Oak Street, which generated around $120 million globally against a reported budget of $80 million. Unlike all three of those films, the new thriller received poor reviews. It now holds a 31% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, which also happens to be way lower than the scores posted by It Ends with Us and The Housemaid.

Here's How Much the Thriller Has Grossed at the Box Office So Far

We're talking, of course, about Verity. Also starring Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett, the movie was directed by Michael Showalter. With its domestic theater count having dropped from around 3,500 to around 2,400, the movie grossed $3 million in its third weekend, taking its running haul past the $70 million milestone. Globally, the film has generated $160 million so far, against a reported budget of $40 million. This puts Verity between other psychological thrillers based on bestsellers such as Where the Crawdads Sing and The Girl on the Train. On October 27, the movie was released on the PVOD market, where it's expected to deliver huge results.
