By now, it has become clear that the new Colleen Hoover adaptation isn't going to become as big a hit as her 2024 sensation It Ends with Us. That movie, starring Blake Lively, Brandon Sklenar, and Justin Baldoni, rode a wave of controversy to more than $350 million worldwide. It was followed by two other Hoover adaptations — Regretting You and Reminders of Him — which grossed around $90 million worldwide each. Both films have been overtaken at the global box office by the film, which is slated to debut on home video later this month. Amazon MGM is already rolling the film back, having removed it from a sizable number of theaters in its third week.
Major movies typically retain their theaters for a two-week window, and in comparison to the disastrous Warner Bros. release Digger, the film in question, Verity, has held on to its theater count rather impressively. Digger was removed from more than 2,700 theaters in its third week of release, which is the third-largest theater drop of all time. Verity, on the other hand, lost 500 theaters this week after having debuted in more than 3,500 theaters two weeks ago. Directed by Michael Showalter, the psychological thriller received mediocre reviews, and is likely to fall short of other book adaptations aimed at a similar demographic. Also starring Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett, Verity seems to have settled at a 31% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.
