Perhaps expectations for the new Colleen Hoover adaptation were unreasonably high. But the lofty projections made sense, given how well Hoover's last few films have performed. The streak began with It Ends with Us, which rode a wave of controversy to more than $350 million worldwide. Even the minor romance adaptations Reminders of Him and Regretting You were able to generate around $90 million worldwide apiece. The new Hoover adaptation was compared to It Ends with Us, mainly because they're both psychological thrillers. It was also compared to last year's The Housemaid, another literary adaptation aimed at the same demographic, which made $400 million globally. However, after three weeks of release and with a home-video debut approaching, the new movie has slowed drastically.
Starring Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett, the film topped the domestic box-office chart with a $32 million debut and has so far generated nearly $150 million worldwide against a reported budget of $40 million. If it's lucky, it should be able to conclude its run in the same range as the 2016 psychological thriller The Girl on the Train, which made around $170 million globally. That said, its chances of matching It Ends with Us, The Housemaid, or even Gone Girl are next to nil. The movie caps a particularly packed year for Hathaway, after The Odyssey, The Devil Wears Prada 2, The End of Oak Street, and Mother Mary.
