After a confusing marketing campaign that briefly positioned it as a Robin Hood-inspired tale, the recently released period action film The Uprising has suffered terribly at the box office. Starring Andrew Garfield in the lead role, the movie never identifies Robin Hood by name, but ends with a stinger that adopts much of the character's imagery. This is the second time that a character with the same name has been acknowledged in a film's final moments; the first, as fans of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy would remember, happened at the end of The Dark Knight Rises. But that was a different Robin altogether, a character that has been portrayed on the big screen on only a handful of occasions. Robin Hood, on the other hand, has had a difficult time as a piece of intellectual property in the last few years.

This year alone, we've seen The Death of Robin Hood, starring Hugh Jackman and directed by Michael Sarnoski. The movie received mixed reviews and ended its box-office run with around $10 million worldwide against a reported budget of $20 million. In 2018, an action-packed Robin Hood reboot starring Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx grossed around $85 million globally against a reported budget of $100 million. Before that, Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe attempted to recapture the magic of Gladiator with a $237 million Robin Hood movie in 2010, but it underperformed with around $321 million worldwide.
