After 'Blade' Cancellation, Mahershala Ali's New Thriller 'Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother' Earns Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score

Mahershala Ali has officially left Blade behind after confirming that he will no longer star in the canceled MCU project, but that isn’t stopping him from finding new sleeper hits. When Ali was first announced as Blade in 2019 at San Diego Comic-Con, the project immediately jumped to the top of lists as one of the most anticipated MCU movies on the slate. Other notable stars like Aaron Pierre, Mia Goth, and even Delroy Lindo were originally attached to star in Blade, but the supernatural MCU movie fell apart after a myriad of behind-the-scenes trouble and creative turnover. What made Blade’s collapse so much more upsetting is that, when the film was announced, Ali was fresh off two Oscar wins in 2016 and 2018 for his performances in Moonlight and Greek Book — there’s a strong case to be made that he would have been the most talented actor in the entire MCU.

One of the names who was attached to direct Blade at one point is Bassam Tariq, who is best known for his work on Mogul Mowgli and Ghosts of Sugar Land. Last year, news broke that Tariq and Ali would work together after all on a new film, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, despite the cancellation of Marvel’s Blade movie. Unlike the vampire horror film, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother had no trouble getting off the ground, and the film is now ready to be released in less than one month, on October 9. The film recently premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, but the question on everyone’s mind: is it going to be worth watching when it comes out?

Is ‘Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother’ Good?

Critics can’t stop raving about Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother after watching the film at TIFF, so much so that it debuted at a perfect 100% on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes from 17 reviews. Screen Rant’s George Bate gave the film a 7/10 in his review, praising Mahershala Ali as “one of the most commanding screen presences working today.” Giovanni Lago of Next Best Picture also lauded the writing of Bassam Tariq in his 8/10 review, asserting that it “allows an actor of Ali’s caliber to really dig deep” with his performance. Doug Jamiesom of The Jam Report didn’t mince words in his 8/10 review, either, proclaiming that “Tariq and Ali deliver an absolute banger.” Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother also stars Giancarlo Esposito.
