We're halfway through spooky season, and the least surprising news of the month is that a new horror movie is topping the box office charts. Last weekend, Other Mommy, a new horror from Host director Rob Savage, opened to the biggest haul of the weekend, turning its $19 million budget into almost $50 million in just a few days. Academy Award winner Jessica Chastain starring in a dual role is likely a big factor in enticing audiences, even with the film receiving scathing reviews from critics.
Based on the 2024 novel Incidents Around the House by Josh Malerman, Other Mommy is already available to pre-order on 4K, Blu-ray, and 4K steelbook, as it hopes to soon transfer its dominance from the big screen to the small screen. But the film is sure to face plenty of competition from other 2026 horror rivals, from the all-conquering, record-breaking Obsession to the viral sensation Backrooms. Another streaming hit that went under the radar during its brief theatrical run is Hokum.
Severance star Adam Scott's underrated 2026 horror is currently a streaming smash, taking the #1 spot on the Hulu top ten in the U.S., at the time of writing. Although Hokum only made $25 million in global revenue during its month-long theatrical run, this was against a small budget of just $5 million, with Scott's presence in the lead role almost guaranteeing a positive financial return. The film was also a success with critics, earning a near-perfect, "certified fresh" 90% rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, where critics referred to it as "compelling," "charming," and "a suffocating miasma of terror and nerves."
A Stephen King Classic Is Taking Over Streaming
As Hokum takes the streaming crown on Hulu, it's a new interpretation of a Stephen King classic that has stolen the spotlight on Prime Video. Once again, modern horror master Mike Flanagan has taken the reins of a King adaptation, turning the beloved Carrie into a must-watch miniseries. The role of the titular telekinetic has been entrusted to young star Summer C. Howell, who is joined by a stacked cast that includes Samantha Sloyan, Amber Midthunder, and spooky season favorite Matthew Lillard.
