Spiders are the worst, let's just be up front about that. Sure, they eat flies who buzz around bothering us, they spin pretty webs, but they're creepy. The eight legs. All the eyes. They're weird looking, but we love weirdness, don't we? But what about when they're enormous, venomous, and apparently determined to make everybody's lives miserable? Exactly. Nightmare fuel. In fact, so effective are they at scaring people, they seem to have actually put off audiences from wanting to spend any time with them.
Crawlers has officially been removed from 927 theaters after just one week, dropping from 1,040 locations to only 113 for its second weekend. It's a gigantic reduction of over 89% after just seven days, which is disastrous for a film whose opening weekend brought in just $462,691 domestically. The film averaged approximately $445 per theater during its debut, making its rapid disappearance from cinemas considerably less surprising.
The film sees what can only be described as the worst possible scenario imaginable, as a catastrophic infestation of venomous and deadly spiders sends an apartment building into lockdown. Trapped inside by a police-mandated quarantine, building manager Serena and her residents battle to survive as the creatures multiply by the second. Armed with her intimate knowledge of the complex, Serena may be the only one who can keep them alive. That is, if she can confront her deepest fear.
'Crawlers' Struggled to Find an Audience
The horror movie earned approximately $584,112 domestically and $940,331 worldwide through the latest available reporting, meaning it had yet to reach $1 million globally despite its international release. With just 113 theaters remaining, Crawlers is now facing an extremely limited second weekend, and its chances of recovering through the domestic theatrical market appear slim.
The movie has been relatively well-received from critics, sitting at 60% on Rotten Tomatoes, but the audience score for the film might just tell us where everything has gone badly wrong. The Popcornmeter, which reflects audience satisfaction with any particular film, is sitting at a dismal 37%. That tells us that audiences who did go to see the film disliked it for the most part, and that's not going to help word of mouth much, is it?
Crawlers is playing in select theaters.
